An EU type-approval number, such as e1*2018/858*00123*04, records which national authority approved a vehicle type, under which legal act, and how many times that approval has been extended. It appears in field 0 of the Certificate of Conformity and on the manufacturer's type plate.
Where to find this number
On the Certificate of Conformity it sits in field 0, next to the make and vehicle category. On the car it is usually stamped on the manufacturer's type plate in the engine bay or on the door pillar. It is not the VIN: the VIN identifies your individual vehicle, this number identifies the approved type it was built to.
